Westminster Abbey
|
|
(London SW1) There has been at *Westminster an abbey dedicated to St Peter since before the Norman *Conquest. *William I was crowned here on Christmas Day in 1066, and the abbey has been the site of every subsequent coronation. (The *Coronation Chair stands behind the high altar.) The present building dates largely from the 13–14C, apart from the two towers at the main entrance which were added from 1734 by *Hawksmoor (adapting a design by *Wren). The abbey contains memorials to many of the nation's most honoured dead – see *Poets' Corner and the *Unknown Warrior.
