The Jungle Book
|
|
(1894) Collection of short stories by *Kipling about Mowgli, a boy who is brought up by a pack of wolves after Shere Khan, a tiger, has frightened away his human parents. He is taught the Law of the Jungle by Baloo, a brown bear, and its skills by Bagheera, a panther. The life of the animals is given a simple dignity when compared with the chaotic human world to which Mowgli returns at the end. The Second Jungle Book (1895) added more stories about Mowgli's time among the animals.
