Coniston Water
|
|
Long narrow lake (8km/5m by about 0.5km/0.3m) in the *Lake District. Its length and relatively sheltered position among the hills caused it to be chosen by both Malcolm and Donald *Campbell for attempts on the water speed record. On the eastern shore is the home of John *Ruskin in his last years. At the northern end is the village of Coniston beneath the local peak, the Old Man of Coniston (802m/2630ft). During the summer a steam yacht (Gondola, first launched in 1859) carries passengers the length of the lake.
