how to imagine Hell

In his Spiritual Exercises, designed as a course of mental self-discipline, Ignatius Loyola describes how to focus on the torments of Hell:

'Hear in imagination the shrieks and groans and blasphemous shouts against Christ our Lord and all the saints. Smell in imagination the fumes of sulphur and the stench of filth and corruption. Taste in imagination all the bitterness of tears and melancholy and a gnawing conscience. Feel in imaginatino the heat of the flames that play on and burn the souls.'

Quoted Bamber Gascoigne The Christians, Cape 1977, page 185
