Days of the week
|
The seven planets known in classical times are the sun, the moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Their names are given to the Roman days of the week, and they survive in various European languages.
English and French between them provide the full list of seven planets making up the week: Sunday, Monday, Mardi, Mercredi, Jeudi, Vendredi, Saturday. During the Anglo-Saxon period the English drop four of the planet days and adopt in their place the Norse gods Tiw, Woden, Thor and Frigg for the middle of the week - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
