Whittle Jet Engine Notebook, c. 1935-39 In the summer of 1944 the Royal Air Force Meteor Mk I, fitted with W2/23 engines, was the first Allied jet fighter to come into operation. Its production was the culmination of many years of research and development work, and was undertaken largely under the direction of Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle.

The item shown here is a rough notebook of calculations and diagrams from the design stage of the prototype engine (the WU) in the mid to late 1930s.
