water polo
|
|
Game which developed informally in Britain in the second half of the 19C, known at first as 'football in the water'. Some early versions used the round ball of association football and others the oval ball of rugby football. The round ball prevailed when official rules were drawn up by the Swimming Association of Great Britain in 1885. Scotland defeated England in the first international in 1890, and water polo was included in the *Olympic Games from 1900.
