Thomas Jones
|
|
(1742–1803) Welsh painter with an extremely original concept, for his period, of suitable subject matter for a landscape painting. He studied with a Welsh painter a generation older than himself, Richard *Wilson, who taught him to use oil sketches as a way of studying landscape. Like Wilson, Jones spent several years in Italy (1776–83) where he often sketched in oil whatever happened to be visible from his window. This habit led to some very distinctive views, particularly of Naples where he lived from 1780 to 1783.
