Island off the east coast of Africa which from the late 17C was an Arab sultanate, originally controlled from Oman but under a local sultan from 1856. It was Africa's largest slave market and had long been a target of British anti-slavery efforts. A treaty for the suppression of the slave trade was signed in 1873, and the island was declared a British protectorate in 1890. It became independent in 1963. The following year the sultan was deposed and Zanzibar joined with Tanganyika to form the republic of *Tanzania.
