Republic and member of the *Commonwealth since 1964. This part of east central Africa was explored by *Livingstone, but the first Europeans to settle in any number were employees of Cecil *Rhodes and the British South Africa Company in the 1890s. The region, known as Northern Rhodesia and of increasing importance for its copper mines, was made a British protectorate in 1924. Northern Rhodesia was a member of the Federation of *Rhodesia and Nyasaland, before becoming independent as Zambia in 1964 with Kenneth Kaunda (b. 1924) as its first president.
