YWCA

|
(Young Women's Christian Association) Organization which is entirely separate from the *YMCA, though influenced by it in its origin and largely sharing its aims. It was established in 1855 by two groups of women in London, whose twin aims combined the spiritual and practical sides of the movement; one was to pray for women (princesses and factory girls were among those for whom prayers were specified), and the other was to found a home for nurses returning from the *Crimean War. A similar group, the Ladies' Christian Association, was formed in New York in 1858, and the present worldwide organization was established in 1894.
