The Water-Babies
|
|
(1863) An improving fantasy for young children by Charles *Kingsley. Tom, a small boy whose job is climbing up the inside of chimneys, escapes from his master, a cruel chimney-sweeep, and is drowned in a stream. He gradually adapts to the more Christian behaviour of the little creatures who live there, the water-babies. They are kept in order by two memorable governess figures – the ferocious Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid, who dishes out punishments and rewards, and the loving Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby.
