(1924–94) Footballer, at centre back, who led Wolverhampton Wanderers to many victories (FA Cup 1949, League Champions 1954, 58, 59). In 1959 he became the first player to win 100 caps for England. Of his final total of 105 international appearances, 70 were in consecutive games; and he captained the country on 90 occasions.
