Worzel Gummidge
|
|
Scarecrow who first appeared in Worzel Gummidge, or the Scarecrow of Scatterbrook Farm (1936), by Barbara Euphan Todd (c.1900–76); the book was selected by *Penguin in 1941 as the first Puffin. Worzel's many scarecrow friends and relations included at that time Earthy Mangold as his fiancée. He became widely known through a television series which began in 1979, written by Keith *Waterhouse and Willis Hall; in this context Worzel, played by Jon Pertwee, had Aunt Sally in place of Earthy as his sweetheart.
