Wormwood Scrubs
|
|
Victorian prison in west London, with a name of Dickensian appropriateness whether used in full or in its common abbreviation – the Scrubs. It was built (1874–90) by the convicts themselves, described in an account of the time as 'felon bees'. Contractors built the first nine lock-up cells, after which the first nine prisoners built more cells and were joined by more prisoners to build more cells, and so on until at last the prison was both complete and full.
