Woolworths
|
|
International chain which developed from the first 'five cent' store opened by F.W. Woolworth in Utica (in the state of New York) in 1879. From the launch of its first shop in Liverpool in 1909, with a top price of sixpence, the British subsidiary of Woolworths rapidly acquired a dominant position on the high street; it was the leading UK retailer until overtaken in 1968 by *Marks & Spencer. Woolworths was bought in 1982 by Kingfisher, under whose management its range of goods has been more clearly focused and its fortunes have revived.
