(249,000 in 1991) Industrial town in West Midlands, often considered the capital of the *Black Country. It was an ancient market town (the large church of St Peter is 15C and the grammar school was founded in the 16C) before becoming an important centre for the iron industry in the 18C. Decorative *japanning was a speciality of nearby Bilston, and there is a good collection of these wares in Bantock House, Wolverhampton's museum of applied art. The neoclassical Art Gallery, designed by Julius Chatwin (1829–1907) and opened in 1884, is strongest in British painting of the 18–19C.
