(1889–1951) Austrian-born philosopher who lived in England from 1929 and was naturalized in 1938. He studied engineering at the university of Manchester in 1908–11 and then philosophy under Bertrand *Russell at Cambridge in 1912–13, before serving in the Austrian army in World War I. In 1921 he published Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, an influential work on the philosophy of logic. In 1929 he returned to Cambridge. His later concerns were with linguistic philosophy and 'language games'. His lecture notes and manuscripts provided the material for Philosophical Investigations (1953) and for several other volumes published after his death.
