(Wisden Cricketers' Almanack) The bible of cricketing statistics, published each year (since 1864) and including the detailed results of the previous 12 months of Test, first class, minor counties and school *cricket – together with cumulative records (of huge importance to enthusiasts) in all combinations of batting, bowling and fielding. John Wisden (1826–84) was a fast bowler and one of the leading cricketers of his day. The first issue of his Almanack provided much information of only marginal relevance to cricket (such as the battles of the *Wars of the Roses), but he soon settled down to the intense specialization which has ensured the long-term success of his venture.
