Richard Wilson
|
|
(1714–82) The first British landscape painter of distinction, born in Wales, son of an Anglican clergyman. His mature style derived from the years which he spent in Rome (1752–7, after two years in Venice), where he fell under the spell of the French 17C painter *Claude, who had lived and worked there. Back in Britain, Wilson interpreted the local landscape with Claude's classical balance, sense of serenity and clarity of light.
