(1905–87) Welsh actor and dramatist. Of his plays, the semi-autobiographical The Corn is Green (1938) has lasted best; it concerns the education of a young Welsh miner, Morgan Evans, and his relationship with his teacher, Miss Moffat. As an actor he was particularly known for his solo performances, based on the life and work of Charles *Dickens (from 1950) and of Dylan *Thomas (from 1955).
