(1759–1833) Evangelical Christian and member of the *Clapham Sect, who devoted most of his energies as a member of parliament (1780–1825) to the campaign against the *slave trade. He was the leading figure in Britain in the abolitionist cause. His birthplace in *Hull is kept as a museum.
