(1803–87, bt 1869) Engineer who in his Manchester workshops revolutionized the making of machine tools by inventing a measuring device, eventually accurate to a millionth of an inch. In the *Crimean War he began to study the design of gun barrels, a field in which he also made many innovations. The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester commemorates him.
