(1907–96, KBE 1948) Pioneer of the jet engine. He took out a patent in 1930 but the first jet to fly was the German Heinkel He 178, with an engine designed by Hans von Ohain (first patent 1935). In 1941 a Gloster E28/39 airframe flew with a Whittle jet engine, the development of which led to the *Meteor.
