White Ship
|
|
The ship which in 1120 sailed from France for England, carrying many of the courtiers of *Henry I. All on board died (except a butcher from Rouen) when it struck a rock off the Cherbourg peninsula. Among them was William the Aetheling, Henry's only legitimate son. The disaster caused the king to attempt, unsuccessfully, to establish his daughter *Matilda as his successor.
