(1714–70) Anglican clergyman, a member of the Holy Club with Charles and John *Wesley in the 1730s, who pioneered open-air preaching in the early years of the *Methodist movement. He eventually split from Wesley, for his own position was more *Calvinist, but his powerful sermons were an important feature of the 18C evangelical revival – particularly in America, where he made several long visits.
