(c.1612) Remorseless tragedy of lust and revenge by *Webster, based on notorious events which had happened in Italy some 30 years before. Brachiano, with the help of the scheming Flamineo, seduces Vittoria Corombona; together they then arrange for the murder of Brachiano's wife and Vittoria's husband. The central scene of the play is Vittoria's lively self-defence when on trial for murder and adultery, after which she is confined in a 'house of penitent whores'. Her rescue by Brachiano is followed by their violent deaths, together with that of Flamineo, at the hands of those with a justified grudge.
