(1720–93) Naturalist who brought lasting fame to the Hampshire village of Selborne, about 26km/16m east of Winchester, where his home is kept as a museum. He was born in the village and spent almost his entire life there. Ordained an Anglican clergyman, he helped out locally as curate; but it was the fauna and flora of the surrounding countryside which claimed his attention. His letters on the subject to two friends form the basis of The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789), the charm of which comes from his keen but amateurish observations.
