Whitaker's Almanack
|
|
Invaluable annual publication, appearing every December with details of British institutions and office holders. It also provides information on Commonwealth and foreign countries, a survey of the previous year's events (September to August) and much else besides – together with the astronomical tables which justify the name 'almanack'. It has been published annually since the 1869 volume was issued in December 1868 by Joseph Whitaker (1820–95). He was then correspondence editor of the Gentleman's Magazine, and the published information was what he had gathered together for his own reference purposes.
