Rex (1905–44) was a precociously talented decorative artist, book illustrator and set designer, best known now for two large murals – The Pursuit of Rare Meats in 1927 for the Tate Gallery (an appropriate theme in that the room was and remains a restaurant), and the more ambitious scheme of 1937 at *Plas Newydd. He was killed on active service in the war. His younger brother Laurence (b. 1912) led the revival of glass-engraving in Britain. He is known for the complex architectural scenes and landscapes which he is able to achieve on goblets, bowls and more recently windows, showing up in subtle shades of white against a black background.
