Which?
|
|
The first and still the best-known publication by the Consumers' Association, formed in 1957 by Michael Young. As its name implies, Which? tests and reports on products available to the consumer. Its first issue appeared in October 1957 with a cover photograph of two housewives looking at four kettles. The issue brought in 10,000 subscribers (a subscription includes membership of the association), and the next year two of the manufacturers modified their kettles to answer the magazine's criticisms. Membership reached 100,000 in 1958, and in 1959 Which? changed from quarterly to monthly publication. The association's activities have extended greatly over the years both as publisher (of the *Good Food Guide among other titles) and as a pressure group. By the early 1990s there were nearly a million members.
