(1802–75, kt 1868) Physicist who from 1834 was professor of experimental physics at King's College, London. He made many discoveries in the fields of acoustics and telegraphy, but is remembered chiefly for the simple device, known now as the Wheatstone bridge, which he designed for measuring electrical resistance.
