West Indies Federation
|
|
Political grouping of the ten main British colonies in the *Caribbean, which lasted from 1958 to 1962. Widely separated geographically, and with different traditions, the group was formed in the belief that only together could its members achieve independence within the *Commonwealth. It was intended by Britain that the Federation should become independent in 1962. But *Jamaica and *Trinidad seceded and became separately independent in that year. The other eight were *Antigua, *Barbados, *Dominica, *Grenada, *Montserrat, *St Kitts (with Nevis and *Anguilla), *St Lucia and *St Vincent, most of whom later found their own separate paths to independence.
