, known as the Hammers (Upton Park, London E13). Football club formed in 1895 by employees of a shipbuilding yard, as the Thames Ironworks Football Club. It became professional in 1898 and was relaunched in 1900 as West Ham United. Elected to Division 2 of the *Football League in 1919, it had no major successes until the 1960s when Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters were in the team. Club victories: FA Cup 1964, 75, 80; European Cup-Winners' Cup 1965.
