Area of northwest London known in particular for the stadium and halls built for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924. The stadium was ready by 1923 to mount the sporting event with which it has become most associated, the *Cup Final; it was later the scene of the 1948 Olympic Games. After the Cup Final of 2000 the stadium was closed for major reconstruction. The *Empire Pool, now known as the Wembley Arena, was added in 1934; and the Wembley Conference Centre was opened in 1977.
