Beatrice and Sidney Webb
|
|
Tireless couple in left-wing politics in the early 20C. In 1892 Sidney Webb (1859–1947, baron Passfield 1929) married Beatrice Potter (1858–1943). Together they wrote a succession of influential books on such subjects as trade unionism, industrial democracy, local government and the treatment of poverty; Beatrice's minority report of 1909 as a member of the Royal Commission on the poor law was an important step in the development of the welfare state. They were closely involved in the establishment of both the *London School of Economics and the *New Statesman.
