Isaac Watts
|
|
(1674–1748) The first great writer of English hymns, author of some 700, many of them still much sung – for example *O God, our help in ages past. Watts brought to hymn-writing a new note of subjective piety. When I survey the wondrous Cross (sung now to the late 18C tune called Rockingham) is believed to be the earliest hymn by any author to include the personal pronoun.
