(45km/28m NW of Norwich) Village which was one of the most popular places of pilgrimage in medieval England. In the late 11C a shrine was built here to the Virgin Mary, after she had appeared in a vision to a pious local lady. An *Augustinian priory was founded in the 12C to cope with the pilgrims to Our Lady of Walsingham. The *Reformation reduced it to ruins (still partly standing), but in modern times a restored shrine has again become a place of pilgrimage, in particular for *Anglo-Catholics.
