Wallace Collection

(London W1) Collection built up by Richard Wallace (1818–90, bt 1871, illegitimate son of the 4th marquess of Hertford) and by four generations of his ancestors. All the treasures, together with the family home containing them (Hertford House, 1776–88), were bequeathed to the nation in 1897 by Wallace's widow. The best-known single item is The *Laughing Cavalier, but the most exceptional holdings are the French paintings, furniture and decorative arts of the 17–19C. There is also sculpture, metalwork, arms and armour, enamels and jewellery from Europe and the east, giving the collection the breadth of a museum of art.
