Founded in 1893 to combine existing university colleges at Aberystwyth (1872) and at Bangor and Cardiff (both 1883). In 1920 Swansea was added and in 1971 St David's College, Lampeter – making a total of five in addition to a college of medicine in Cardiff. The four general colleges, apart from St David's, have subtly differing names. They are: University College of Wales, Aberystwyth; University College of North Wales, Bangor; University of Wales College of Cardiff; and University College, Swansea.
