(Voluntary Service Overseas, London SW15) Aid organization set up in 1958 to give school-leavers a challenging year in a developing country before going to university. During the 1960s the emphasis shifted to sending graduates whose particular skills were needed, and today the operation is limited to trained people, usually in their thirties, who spend two years abroad. Their wages are paid at the appropriate local level by the host country – usually a member of the *Commonwealth, for reasons of the shared language. Medicine, building and business are the three areas in which volunteers are most in demand, and there are about 1000 of them abroad at any one time.
