Harry Vardon
|
|
(1870–1937) One of the greatest of all British golfers, whose six victories in the Open (1896, 98, 99, 1903, 11, 14) remain still an unbeaten record. He also won the US Open in 1900 before defending his 1899 British title, thus holding the two major trophies at the same time – a feat not repeated by a British player until *Jacklin 70 years later. His name is also widely known to golfers because of the popular Vardon grip (the little finger of the right hand overlapping the index finger of the left), but in fact it is wrongly attributed to him and was in use before his time.
