Island group in the Pacific, west of Fiji, which has been a republic and a member of the *Commonwealth since 1980. The islands were named the New Hebrides by Captain *Cook in 1774. By the late 19C both Britain and France had established strong interests in the area, resulting in a condominium (from 1906) in which the islands were jointly administered by the two countries. Independence was achieved under the new name of Vanuatu in 1980.
