(pen name of Winifred Cushing, 1907–90) The nation's best-loved sentimental poet, whose verses – about everyday emotions and the sense of religious wonder – appeared for 40 years from 1935, in the Daily Mirror and subsequently the Sunday Mirror, under the heading 'The Quiet Corner'. She was particularly popular during World War II, when families were separated. The narrow width of a newspaper column caused her poems to be printed as if they were prose. The one most often quoted begins: 'If you stand very still in the heart of a wood you will hear many wonderful things, the snap of a twig, the wind in the trees and the whirr of invisible wings.'
