Union Jack
|
|
(or Union Flag) The flag of the *United Kingdom since the *Union with Ireland in 1801. It is made up of the red cross of St George on a white ground (for England), the white diagonal cross or saltire of St Andrew on a blue ground (Scotland) and the red saltire of St Patrick on a white ground (Ireland). A simpler Union flag had been in use previously, combining just the English and Scottish elements. 'Jack' is the nautical term for a flag.
