Union Chain Bridge
|
|
The first suspension bridge large enough to carry wheeled traffic, built over the river *Tweed about 8km/5m from its mouth in 1820 and still surviving. The engineer was Samuel Brown (1776–1852), who had patented improved methods for linking chain cables and for constructing bridges. His advances made possible the better-known examples by *Telford over the Menai Strait and at Conwy.
