Acts of Union
|
|
The acts of parliament which merged England with first Scotland (1707) and then Ireland (1800, effective from 1 Jan. 1801) to form a single *United Kingdom. The acts put an end to the parliaments in Edinburgh and Dublin, bringing MPs from Scotland and Ireland to the House of Commons in Westminster. In spite of minority opposition represented by the *SNP, the union with Scotland still holds. But the union with Ireland provoked the long 19C political crisis over *Home Rule and came to an end in 1921, except in *Northern Ireland.
