Ulster
|
|
The most northerly of the ancient kingdoms and provinces of *Ireland, and often used now as an alternative name for *Northern Ireland. Conquered by the English in the 13C and turned into a feudal earldom, it had passed by 1461 to the crown (by descent and marriage). It was divided in the 16C into nine counties, of which six (the *six counties) remained in the United Kingdom in 1921, while the other three (Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan) became the province of Ulster in the republic of Ireland.
