Land-locked republic in east central Africa, a member of the *Commonwealth since 1962. The first European to reach the area was *Speke in 1862. In the following decades rival missionaries, imperialists and traders competed for influence in the territory, which became a British protectorate through a piecemeal succession of treaties with local rulers (the first was with the kabaka of *Buganda in 1894). The country became independent in 1962 with Milton Obote (b. 1924) as the first prime minister.
