Uffington White Horse
|
|
(32km/20m SW of Oxford) One of the most authentic of England's hillside chalk figures. The stylized image of a horse, 114m/374ft long, is believed to have been cut in the turf by Britons in the 1st century BC (it is close to the ancient track known as the *Ridgeway), though local tradition has long maintained that *Alfred the Great created it in celebration of his victory over the Danes somewhere nearby in the battle of *Ashdown (871).
